It is a busy, old-school room that mixes Irani, Parsi, Chinese and North Indian food with cold beer, and it is a fixture on most first-time visitor lists, partly thanks to the novel Shantaram. It suits groups and travellers more than anyone wanting a quiet coffee.

Leopold Cafe Mumbai: history and the 2008 attack

Leopold Cafe was founded in 1871 by Irani settlers and named after King Leopold of the Belgians. On 26 November 2008 it was one of the first places attacked in the Mumbai terror attacks, and 11 people were killed there. The cafe reopened four days later and still keeps some of the damage visible as a memorial.

As for the Leopold Cafe interior, District describes a nostalgic, old-school setting. Expect a busy, noisy room in the evenings rather than a quiet coffee stop.

Cafes in Kala Ghoda and Fort

Kala Ghoda Cafe

Kala Ghoda Cafe (KGC) was opened in January 2009 by Farhad Bomanjee, starting as an 18-seat coffee shop on Ropewalk Lane. It now seats close to 100 across a front cafe, a main dining room and a wine bar at the back. Regulars come for coffee, salads, breakfast plates and bakes such as the ginger-carrot cake, and the walls double as a small art gallery. Its District listing describes a quiet, library-like feel, which makes it one of the best cafes in Kala Ghoda for a long breakfast.

  • Where: 10 Ropewalk Lane, Kala Ghoda, Fort
  • Cost: reported Rs 1,200 for two (District, Oct 2026); EazyDiner listing (Oct 2026) shows about Rs 400, likely outdated

Getting there and best time to go

Churchgate station (Western line) is closest to Earth Cafe and the NCPA. CSMT (Central line) is closer to Horniman Circle and Fort. From either, Kala Ghoda and Colaba are a short walk or taxi ride. Parking in Fort and Colaba is tight, and EazyDiner notes no parking at Kala Ghoda Cafe.

Weekday mornings are the easiest time for Kala Ghoda Cafe and Boojee Fort. Leopold is open late, so it works after a Gateway of India evening.
Looking for cafes in Fort Kochi? That is a different place, in Kerala. This page covers Fort in South Mumbai only.

How we picked

This is an independent guide with no paid listings. Every cafe has a 2025 or 2026 source or a current listing page. We left out ratings and review quotes, and we give cost for two exactly as the source reported it. For more areas, see the Mumbai cafes hub.
